A year in review

2024 was a landmark year for Peel Waters.

As the calendar year draws to a close, take a look at some of the key highlights from Glasgow Waters and our developments across Scotland including us securing planning consent for 1,100 new homes at Yorkhill Quay, and completing major new infrastructure at James Watt Dock; as well as what announcements and milestones to look out for in 2025.

Yorkhill Quay

Planning consent secured for major waterside neighbourhood – Yorkhill Quay, Glasgow Waters

In July, Glasgow City Council issued the vital planning consent we needed to deliver our plans for Yorkhill Quay, which will transform a currently derelict brownfield site, into a vibrant waterfront neighbourhood, connecting the west end of Glasgow to the city centre.

Our approved plans include 1,100 new homes for the open market, build-to-rent and co-living sectors, alongside a 200-bedroom hotel, commercial space and 2,500 square metres of land for leisure use.

Reflection from Brian Lavalette, Property Director for Scotland at Peel Waters:

“It’s great to see the planning consent come through for this fantastic sustainable development at Glasgow Waters. Glasgow Waters is one of the largest and most exciting regeneration projects in Scotland and Yorkhill Quay will be a major, landmark neighbourhood within it, delivering much-needed new homes, improved connectivity and infrastructure whilst creating a pipeline of new jobs for our community.

“We now look forward to partnering up with leading, innovative developers and specialists to transform this derelict brownfield site into a vibrant waterfront neighbourhood with a thriving community.”

James Watt Dock on the road to success – New road and causeway completed

Through a joint venture with Riverside Inverclyde Urban Development Company we delivered a major piece of infrastructure improvement at James Watt Dock this year. Extending over 200 metres, the new road and causeway have been designed to open up Garvel Island, assisting the existing businesses in that area with better connectivity whilst also providing brand-new access into James Watt Dock and enabling the remaining sites for future development.

The new road and causeway have been built on new land which was created by sustainable infilling. The infill was undertaken by reusing clean demolition material, collected from local demolition projects instead of producing any new materials.

Reflection from Peel Waters’ Brian Lavalette who is also a member of the James Watt Dock LLP board:

“This is the next step in the long-standing redevelopment project to regenerate the historic James Watt Dock site into a vibrant new residential, leisure and commercial community. Good connectivity and accessible locations are crucial for a community to grow and we are very proud to have worked in partnership with Riverside Inverclyde Urban Development Company and our other partners to complete this project and continue working together to deliver new opportunities for the area.”

Room with a view – Success for Sixteen Robertson Street

2024 saw a wave of success for our historic office building 16 Robertson Street. We welcomed 13 new tenants into our striking Grade A listed building which was built in 1885 and is situated in the heart of Glasgow’s International Financial Services District.

The building which looks out over the River Clyde is now home to an eclectic mix of tenants, including leading architects, property experts and low-carbon district heat specialists who have all chosen the building for their Glasgow business base.

Reflection from Ruairidh Moir, Chartered Architect and Director of BARD:

“As architects, we are naturally attracted to interesting places and spaces and have not been disappointed at 16 Robertson Street.  It is a culturally and historically significant building that played a huge role in the development and expansion of Glasgow through its links to the Clyde and the wider world.  This building is a storybook, is highly distinctive and full of character and quality.

“We are excited to become tenants within this backdrop and be part of the community of businesses here. It’s fair to say we’ve been given a warm welcome and the team at BARD are excited with what the future holds in our new home.  I think we will be very happy here.”
