LEARNING MORE ABOUT MARKETING AND PR AT PEEL WATERS
English Literature and Creative Writing student, Eva Marsden (pictured above centre) spent time with the Peel Waters Marketing team this summer and shares what she learned from her experience.
WAS IT WHAT I EXPECTED?
I came to Peel Waters hoping to understand more about a Marketing and PR role and what it entails. I was expecting it to be a computer-based job however I was surprised by the largely collaborative nature of the job. Throughout the week I joined Emma Green, Communications and Marketing Lead in various meetings. I found a meeting about Liverpool Waters and their plans for a Dockside Bar particularly interesting.
I joined Kate Holland and Molly Lewis in a meeting about Trafford Palazzo and their Summer Sports Fest programme, I admired how they all shared their ideas and responded to each other with positivity and openness. I liked these meetings about event planning because they revealed the creativity that a job in Marketing allows.
WHAT DID I LIKE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE?
I went to visit the Trafford Palazzo with Molly to see how she filmed social media content for Legoland and EL&N London. We also talked about the different tasks that her job entails, as it is not one dimensional, and she answered any questions I had about working in a corporate office.
Practicing editorial writing
Emma gave me the task of writing a 2024 website update for the developments on the Peel Waters sites. This helped me practice editorial writing and gave me an insight into the new features that are coming to the Peel Waters owned areas.
I am particularly excited about the Therme Manchester Wellbeing Resort that is coming to TraffordCity as this is such a big development for Peel Waters and will hopefully increase tourism in this wonderful area that has so many interesting activities to offer. I am also looking forward to the building of the surf park because I think this is a unique addition to the cityscape and a way of encouraging people to visit TraffordCity for summer leisure and sport.
A wide diversity of projects
Another development that I think is pivotal for Peel Waters is the Embassy Village that will aid homeless and vulnerable men in re-entering the working world while providing them with the necessary support. This village will hopefully be a catalyst for change for the homeless in the Manchester area.
I admire the range of the Peel Waters portfolio because they contribute to so many vital sectors in the cities they develop. James Whittaker mentioned that the diversity of developments Peel Waters takes on is one of the things he loves about his job. I believe this is an element that keeps the team invested and enthused because it allows them to expand their skillset and experience.
WHY DO I THINK DOING WORK EXPERIENCE IS IMPORTANT?
As someone who is still deciding what career path I want to follow, I thought it would be helpful to talk to as many people as possible about their roles at Peel Waters. Furthermore, it has been beneficial to experience what corporate meetings, offices and tasks are like. I have had the opportunity to practice transferrable and valuable skills that I will no doubt use in my future career.
I also got to visit the private heliport in TraffordCity with Emma and David, we saw the helicopters and spoke to some of the team there who explained how they are commercialising their space for festivals. It was the in-person aspect that I found especially appealing for my work experience because it is an element that is unique to Peel and their portfolio.
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE PEEL WATERS TEAM?
I spoke to various members of the Peel Waters and Peel Retail and Leisure team to find out about the variety of jobs available in the marketing-related sector. Each person was so enthusiastic about their job, and I was inspired by how passionately they talked about their career and their journey to working with Peel.
I would like to thank Kate and James for the opportunity to experience working for Peel Waters .The Peel team have demonstrated the importance of friendliness and personality within the workplace and the sociable office atmosphere made my week all the more enjoyable!
